Abstract
Craig Gidney is a fiction writer living in Washington, DC. He spent his childhood in 16th Street Heights, a middle-class, African-American neighborhood of Northwest DC in the 1970's. His parents moved here from [North Carolina] for his father's work as a dentist.
Topics of the interview include:
− Parents' move to Washington, DC for father's dental practice.
− Growing up in 16th St. Heights neighborhood – predominantly African-American, middle-class neighborhood
− bookish childhood – free time spent at MLK library
− attending private school
− responding to personal ad in Blade newspaper – reflection on difference between personal ads then and now
− discovery that brother is gay
− going to Hampshire College – alternative curriculum
− going to SMYAL youth center when on summers home from college
− developing cohort of friends from SMYAL friendship
