Community Center, 1724 20th St., NW.

Description

This is the building which the Rainbow History Project website describes as Washington's first gay community center. The building is located at 1724 20th St., NW, in Washington, DC, not far from Dupont Circle. These photographs were taken by me in 1974. They show Deacon Maccubbin's "Earthworks" on the first floor to the right of the entrance. (See the signage on the windows.) The pictures show ASTA – the American Society of Theatre Arts – on the basement level. - Richard Haight, 2012
