A DC resident since 1977, Jill has been primarily involved in the arts community, including groups such as the Lesbian and Gay Chorus of Washington, GALA Choruses, and the GLBT Arts Consortium, in the early days of SMYAL and in delivering food to HIV/AIDs patients. She brings up some of the tensions between gays and lesbians in the GALA Choruses movement and mentions finding a DC-based feminist newspaper, Off Our Backs, that pointed her to under-the-radar GLBT bars in DC, particularly the Capitol Hill area. She also speaks about some of the early legal support for LGBTQ people in DC, particularly under former mayor Marion Barry.
