An Incurable Romantic: The Life and Loves of John Moore McCalla, Jr.

Abstract

The memoirs of Dr. John McCalla Jr., a nineteenth century Washington DC physician, portray the life of an active male bisexual in the second half of that century. The papers, at the Historical Society of Washington, were transcribed and edited by Mark Herlong, Ph.D., who has extensively researched the clubs, social activities and other events recalled in the McCalla papers.

McCalla's memoirs reflect the pressures and activities of local male bisexuals during the period. Herlong summarized the papers in this presentation to the 30th annual Washington, DC Historical Studies Conference in November 2003.
