Lindsay McBride conducted diversity and sensitivity trainings in the 1990s for the Police Department and Fire Department in Washington D.C. The purpose of the trainings was to increase awareness and knowledge around the GLBT community. McBride describes the schedule of the trainings and the individuals who attended them. Additionally, McBride discusses the disconnect between the GLBT community and the Police and Fire Departments regarding the type of emergency response care provided to GLBT people. McBride outlines that the distrust GLBT people have of first responders came from serious incidents, but that from her perspective, most first responders who attended the trainings want to provide a high level of service to everybody while also following protocol.
