Dad in sales for MCI/Verizon Georgetown Wrote for the Georgetown Independent While she was a student there was a hate crime against a LGBT student and there was 1 university sponsored person to support the students afterwards. At Georgetown, she was involved in the LGBT activism as an ally until her senior year. As an ally, it felt like gay and queer students were at the margins. There was one group called GU Pride that organized events but it was mostly white gay men. Queer women organized a lot around the Women’s Collective because GU Pride didn’t feel like it represented their needs. GU can appear very homogeneous from the outside and not gay positive. The administration would accept and tolerate but not necessarily support. After this incident the university president, who was the first layperson of a Catholic University in the U.S. He stood up and said that we can and should support the LGBT community. A LGBTQ resource center was created. As the director of the resource center, "Shiva" Subbaraman made a point to enlist the support for the Center from all of the Jesuit priests. She realized how much the culture had shifted at her Lavender Graduation, when Kara Swisher, a tech reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area, came back to speak and talked about not being back since the 80’s because of how toxic the environment had been. Also at that time, GU Pride was suing the administration for acknowledgement of their organization. Now there are 2 full time employees, large alumni community, bring speakers to campus, hold parties. Journalism After working at Georgetown for a few years and getting her graduate degree, she interned at NPR on the Arts desk. Moved to Washington City Paper as the Arts Editor. Found that the pieces that spoke to her the most were those that had to do with gender, identity and justice issues. Amanda Hess left her beat at Slate and Christina saw it as an opportunity to write about a broad range of topics (science, arts, etc) through a lens of gender. Her family moved to the greater DC area in 1959, and when she graduated high school in 1966 she immediately began working in the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a clerk. After reading an article in the Washington Star that gave a hotline number for a gay community center, Meryl decided to take a chance and call it. She then began going to lesbian house parties, and soon after divorced her husband. Outside of house parties, Meryl talks about going to lesbian bars like Phase 1 and Club Madame. While these places came with an increased risk of retaliation and violence, they were nonetheless an integral part of the lesbian community. Meryl was also involved in a sexuality task force and lesbian potlucks, but most of her early activism concerned the Gay Women’s Alternative (GWA). The GWA was a group that was very involved in education and networking within the lesbian community. The Washington, DC branch met every Wednesday and occasionally hosted dances or open houses. Meryl did a lot of work organizing events and keeping members informed by doing things like managing supplies, distributing fliers, and helping to manage mailing lists. Meryl also recounts her experiences as a gay woman within HUD and her part in HUD GLOBE in the 1990s. HUD GLOBE is the LGBT group at HUD, and it is still active today. Looking back on the years, Meryl recounts some of the lost spaces she misses the most, such as Lammas Books. She also recalls some of the intersectionality, or lack thereof, within the LGBT community. In part one, Chuck Goldfarb discusses his experiences as an openly gay federal worker in the 1970s and 1980s when there were regulations against homosexuals working in the government. Chuck also talks about the first gay pride and his experiences with the Gay Switchboard, Black and White Men Together, SMYAL, Asians and Friends, and the SHARE Project. Chuck was extremely involved in various community organizations. For the Gay Switchboard, he was a facilitator for several years. Chuck discusses a split within the Gay Switchboard group over the need for more formal training for the volunteers and the challenges with intersectionality at the Gay Switchboard. In the 1980s, Chuck became involved in Black and White Men Together (BWMT) around the same time when the discrimination response system had been put in place. Chuck discusses the people who were working at BWMT that he got to work with, such as Chris Bates, Jim Mercer, and Bruce Pennington. He briefly touches upon the tension that existed between the local and national association of BWMT in terms of how politically radical they were. Chuck describes the major changes happening to the gay community at the beginnings of the AIDS Epidemic and the resources available in the Washington D.C. area, such as Whitman Walker Clinic. He goes on to discuss how the Whitman Walker Clinic was pushed to be more open to Black people, since it was primarily serving white men. Chuck was also heavily involved with AIDS related research, specifically the SHARE Project out of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore MD which conducted essential AIDS epidemiological study with over a thousand participants. He discusses both his participation in the SHARE Project as well as his role on the Community Advisory Board reviewing and approving questionnaires. Overall, Chuck discusses building his career in Washington D.C. and getting involved in the gay community, including being involved with and serving in leadership positions at several local organizations. In part two, Chuck continues to discuss his work with local organizations, primarily focusing on SMYAL and Asians and Friends. He got involved with SMYAL through the founders Stefan Wade and Robert Hartman. SMYAL was formed to support sexual minority youth in response to criminalization and hospitalization of gender non-conforming youth. Chuck discusses the challenges with working with a youth advocacy organization, including concern over adults volunteering and homophobia. He discusses how from the beginning of SMYAL, leadership was cognizant of the need to have strict rules in place to protect the volunteers, the organization, and youth from abuse allegations. Chuck describes the demographics of the youth that SMYAL served and the various ways they tried to publicize SMYAL through school newspapers. He acknowledges that SMYAL, while successful in having a racially diverse youth audience, struggled with serving youth across social classes. Chuck emphasizes that the struggle of serving youth across social classes was not an issue limited to SMYAL, but an issue inherent in American society. In the 1990s, Chuck became involved with Asians and Friends. Unlike with other organizations, Chuck decided to only be involved with Asians and Friends as a member not as a leader within the organization. That was mainly due to the core function of Asians and Friends being social not political. When discussing Asians and Friends, Chuck draws connections between them and Black and White Men Together. Additionally, he describes a tension between interracial organizations and all Black or all Asian organizations. While some organizations wanted to work with all Black or all Asian organizations, there was also tension and some organizations did not want to work with them. In addition to discussing the organizations Chuck was involved with, he also describes an annual Halloween party he held for several years starting in the 1980s. He discusses doing drag for the first time, at the urging of his friend Phillip Wright, and costumes people would wear to his parties. While discussing drag and dressing up, he notes that it is a liberating experience and that his parties created spaces where people could express themselves. In part three, Chuck discusses his friendship with Simon Nkoli, an anti-apartheid and gay rights activist in South Africa. Chuck became friends with Simon through a tour he did with the National Association of Black and White Men Together. In the 1990s Chuck traveled to South Africa for the first time, where he was able to reconnect with Simon and attend the first AIDS awareness event in South Africa. Chuck discusses Simon’s activism in South Africa and when he came to the US. Throughout the years, Chuck and Simon maintained their friendship and visited each other in South Africa and the US. Chuck describes how Simon was always interested in coming to SMYAL when visiting DC and talking with youth. The Third Side ran six monthly episodes from January through June of 1991. It was produced in the home of Larry Kennedy and Kevin Kerdash for the local public access channel DCTV, then aired in Washington, DC; Sacramento, California; Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; and Portland, Oregon. Featured guests included Larry Kramer, Jon Hinson, The Flirtations, Craig Dean and Patrick Gill, and Rob Eichberg. One segment featured Jason Dilly's Project Face to Face, which was part of the Smithsonian Institution's Experimental Gallery. Visitors viewed life mask of people with aids and listened to tapes of that person speaking about their life. The Smithsonian asked to use this segment as part of that exhibit, where it was screened hourly for a month. That segment is now a permanent part of the Smithsonian's collection. Included is a flyer that was used to promote the show at the 1991 Gay Pride Day. It was there that Kevin and Larry realized that most of DC was not yet wired for cable, and even those who knew of the show could not get it. It was this plus difficulty getting regular help with the show that made them decide to stop production. To this day Kevin and Larry are very proud with what they accomplished with its brief history. GAY FAIRFAX / GAY SPECTRUM The producers of Gay Fairfax changed its name to Gay Spectrum in the fall of 1993 when the FLGCA Board of Directors refused to allow other financial sponsors of the program. Already Executive Producer Steve Futch had entered into an agreement with the Lambda Rising bookstore for financial support and this was acknowledged in an announcement after the final credits. The new program was exactly the same in format and content with a new theme and opening graphics. The new Gay Spectrum was co-hosted by Eric Randall (a pseudonym for Randy Leverette) and Angela Judy. Crewmembers (many from Gay Fairfax) included Rob Switala, Dave Johnson, Michael Claypoole, Clark Chesser, Michael Fry, Charles Roberts, Jean Ponton, Gail Goodfriend, and others. New reporters included Melissa Anderson, Rich Kazinski, Rick Barton, and Bob Connelly. Memorable highlights included an entire program devoted to the D.C. AIDSWalk '94 including interviews with Second Lady Tipper Gore and D.C. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and other interviews with Congressman Gerry Studds and White House Aide George Stephanopolous at the annual Human Rights Campaign Dinner. The show began to loose steam when a very overworked Steve Futch left the show in early 1996. Rob Switala and Michael Claypoole stepped in as co-producers quickly changed the frequency from a weekly to a monthly series. Soon Randy Leverette left the show to take a job with the Home Box Office (HBO) in New York. The last four episodes were co-hosted by Bob Connelly and Angela Judy during the summer of 1996. But enthusiasm for the show had begun to wane, and the Gay Spectrum left the air for good just as Gay News Network was becoming a success.
