Steve Weinberg was born in 1952 in Brooklyn, NY, to a very sports-oriented family. While attending the University of Buffalo in the early 70s, he began grappling with his sexuality, and decided to see a psychiatrist. However, after an unhelpful experience with psychiatry, he abandoned this initial attempt to come out. Steve subsequently moved to DC in 1974 to attend law school, and was closeted and dating women for several years. However, in 1979 Steve noticed an ad in the Washington Blade for the Gay and Lesbian Switchboard, and decided to reach out to them for guidance. Steve joined their programs and social gatherings for gay men seeking to come out, and eventually began to enjoy living as a gay man in DC. However, he still yearned to find fellow sports enthusiasts in the gay community. Steve met law school acquaintance Cal Steinmetz at drag bar the Rogue. The two became best friends––bonding over their similar upbringings, and intense love of sports––and Steve eventually joined Cal’s law practice in Dupont Circle. Meanwhile, gay sports leagues began forming in DC in the early 80s with the creation of DC Sports, and Steve and Cal enthusiastically joined various gay leagues. Steve played softball, bowling, and tennis, finding the leagues a great way to meet other gay men, make friends, and engage in friendly competition. In 1993, after learning that the 1994 Gay Games were set to be in New York, Steve––an ice hockey fanatic––decided to create DC’s very own gay ice hockey team. His team competed in both the 1994 and 1998 Gay Games, winning the gold medal in 1994. In September of 2025, Steve currently splits his time between Florida and Silver Spring, and continues to bowl and play pickleball. He notes that the gay leagues are far less popular than they once were, and wonders how growing acceptance of LGBT people has affected their existence. He is nostalgic for the time when gay sports spaces were all the rage, where one could share a space with other gay people and be fully understood. Steve critiques the current political atmosphere in 2025 of LGBT repression and hate, and wonders how this will affect all the progress of acceptance that’s been made. He also muses that in recent times, he’s been more forthcoming with telling people he’s gay. Mary Jean Collins lead during the foundational years of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and as her time progressed in Washington, she found herself leading not just in the queer community, but in the city and the country as a whole. Motivated by her Catholic upbringing and her family’s strong values in grassroots activism, Collins grew up dedicated to working to better the community around her. Especially influenced by the Catholic nuns in her city, she came to NOW inspired by the fact that it was the first organization she had seen created and run by empowered women. Crisostomo, 1952- Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 6/4/2023 Description An account of the resource Don Crisostomo is a native of Bethesda, MD, who came out in high school, was active in the Gay Student Alliance, Gay Men's VD Clinic, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance, the Couples Support Group and ENLACE. He founded the Suburban Maryland Gay and Lesbian Alliance and worked to get non-discrimination ordinance passed in Montgomery County. He also led the GAPIN-DC, the Gay Asian Pacific Islander Network. Relation A related resource In 2023, Crisostomo donated the GAPIN banner to RHP. The banner was created for the 1993 March on Washington and was used in the 1994 Stonewall 25 March in New York City, and at subsequent Pride events in DC. The banner was in Crisostomo's possession since the 1993 March until its donation to RHP. The RHP release form was used and all rights belong to RHP. Abstract A summary of the resource. Don Miguel Crisostomo was born in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1952. His parents are Filipino (father) and Russian Jewish (mother); he was raised Catholic and practices some Judaism and also Buddhism. In 1970, during his senior year in high school, he gave a speech on gay rights and came out to his class and wrote “Legalize Homosexuality” on the chalkboard. He briefly studied dentistry in the Philippines (to avoid the Vietnam War draft), and returned to DC in 1972 to attend the University of Maryland College Park. He became active in the Gay Student Alliance and coordinated to bring Frank Kameny and Craig Howell, the then-president of the Gay Activists Alliance, to speak at UMD. He joined their efforts and traveled to New York for the 1976 Gay Pride March. He volunteered at the Gay Men’s VD Clinic on Wisconsin Avenue where he met Leonard Matlovich, the ex-military activist and a fellow volunteer. He was also active in Bet Mishpachah, a group for gay Jews. In 1980 he began a relationship with Robert Coggin and helped form the Suburban Maryland Gay and Lesbian Alliance. They worked together to pass the 1984 Montgomery County ordinance to prohibit discrimination on the grounds of sexuality; they also assisted with other counties and statewide efforts. Both Crisostomo and Coggin became active in the Couples Support Group, a social and support network for gay men in committed relationships. Together they marched in the 1988 Gay Pride parade, and their photograph appeared on the front of the Washington Post’s Metro Section (June 22, 1988). He volunteered with the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. He then joined ENLACE and was recording secretary. After the November 1990 murder of Ana Maria Rosales, the Walk Without Fear annual marches took place; he spoke at the peace vigil about violence against Asians as both a representative of ENLACE and the Gay Asian Pacific Islander Network (GAPIN). In conjunction with the 1993 March on Washington, he organized the first national conference for Gay Asians to coincide with the march. He coordinated many groups from across the country to participate; it included a special forum for gay Asian women. GAPIN had a banner created for the march and Crisostomo inherited the banner when the previous leader left the group. They marched in the Stonewall 25 March in New York in 1994, and used the banner at other events. There was conflict with the Asians and Friends group surrounding the Asians-only focus of GAPIN and the non-exclusive nature of AF. In 1995 he relocated to San Francisco, where he was active in gay community affairs, especially AIDS activism and Asian support networks. Abstract A summary of the resource. 1950s-present. Tom Bower was an early organizer of the Washington DC chapter of Dignity, a group for Catholic LGBT-identified individuals and remains an active participant. It is a support system and a social justice organization that donates to community groups. Tom speaks of his dual-identity as Catholic and gay and his personal choice to stick with his faith. He describes the ways Dignity was embraced by DC Catholics and the times when they faced discrimination and rejection form the Church. Tom has lived in Washington DC since the 1960s and worked in the Smithsonian museums. Due to the intellectual and artistic leaning of his job and social circles, Tom found fairly easy acceptance as an out gay man. He describes attending the first Pride parade (more of a rally), the demographics of the gay community over the decades, the gay job network, and popular gathering places such as leather bar The Eagle, P St. Beach and Lamda Rising bookstore. He shares memories of the AIDS crisis including seeing the memorial quilt on the Mall and volunteering for the Whitman Walker clinic. This oral history belongs to the Rainbow History Project Subject The topic of the resource The journey of a HIV/AIDS survivor Abstract A summary of the resource. 1982-2013 Wallace talked about moving to DC in 1982 when he was in his early 20's. He lived a fun young gay man life. Spending weekends out at clubs developing many friendships. He became HIV+ through a lover who became HIV+ through his hemophilia. This transformed Wallace's life. After his lover passed, he became an HIV activist. Worked two jobs and joined several gay and HIV activist groups. Wallace was in the first AIDS Ride from Philly to DC. Wallace was in several of the AIDS Rides. Wallace met a 10 year old boy on one of the rides who was born with HIV. This boy left a strong impression on Wallace. Someone Wallace would like to find today. He met a second love Myron Miles (?) through the MCC. In the mid-1990s Myron had a mid-life crisis, ended the relationship with Wallace and started dating a man named Everett Jennings. This proved a very dangerous for Mryon. Everett was mentally ill and tried to kill Mryon, Mryon's parents and grandmother. It was a big drama. Wallace talked about how he was out at his jobs throughout his working career here in DC. But when he was HIV and when friends and lovers died, he kept that to himself. Michael Sainte-Andress is a Black gay artist, performer, and community figure who was born in Seattle, raised in Houston, Texas, and later moved to Washington, D.C., in the mid‑1970s after serving in the U.S. Navy. In this interview, he reflects on his experience being openly gay in the Navy during the early 1970s. He also discusses his involvement in Washington’s theater scene, where he performed primarily in musicals and drew on his background in dance. Beyond the stage, he offers a vivid account of Black gay culture in the 1970s and 1980s, recalling popular venues such as the Club House and the Coffee House—a Black gay artistic space where he performed introspective, theatrical poetry. In her interview, Louise Gant discusses her experience as a black bisexual woman in Washington DC, considering herself one of the few politically vocal activists in the black LGBTQ+ community at the time. Being first exposed to the community through the Sapphire Sapphos, Gant went on to be involved in the DC Coaltion of Black Lesbians and Gays. Later in life, Gant joined the Mautner Project, a health service for LGBTQ+ with cancer. Part of her inspiration to join the Mautner Project stemmed from her desire to add her own diverse voice to a predominantly white-led organization in order to further visibility of and within the black queer community. Notably, as such an active leader in the community, Gant discusses how such a role can become burdensome, especially during the AIDS epedimic which saw many losses within the black gay male community. While asserting she still plans to keep an active role in the community, Gant ends the interview with a discussion on creating spaces for the older generation of black LGBTQ+ people. Earl Fowles moved to Washington DC from New York in 1996 for a position in Damien Ministries and at the encouragement of his friends in DC. His friend, Christopher Bates, connected him to several people and organizations that he became involved in, such as the DC Care Coalition where he served as a board member. He succeeded Carlene Cheatam as president of DC Capital Pride in 1997. He remained in that role for three years. He then became president of the National Federation of Black Prides (the predecessor of today’s International Federation of Black Prides). Upon leaving that role, he served as co-chair of the Community Prevention Group, an advisory body for DC’s Agency for HIV/AIDS (AHA). In that role, he advised AHA on how to spend monies provided by the CDC for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Fowlkes preferred “behind the scenes” activism; continuing dialogue and managing follow-up activities long past marches, demonstrations, and events. Key events that he did attend include the AIDS Memorial Quilt display on the National Mall in 1992 and 1996, the latter in which he participated by reading a selection of names of those represented in the quilt. Dr. Richard DiGioia moved to Washington, DC in 1974 during a two-year medical military commitment. DiGioia, who had extensive experience treating sexually transmitted infections from his prior military service in Korea, first heard about the Gay Men’s Venereal Disease Clinic while listening to the Friends radio program in 1975. DiGioia began volunteering at the clinic, and soon became the clinic’s doctor. DiGioia also opened up his own internal practice in 1977, and advertised his services in the Washington Blade–becoming one of the first openly gay physicians in DC. By the early 1980s, DiGioia began seeing some of DC’s first cases of HIV/AIDS. DiGioia was heavily involved in treating, studying, and spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS in both the gay community and medical community in Washington. For example, DiGioia wrote a regular medical column in the Blade sharing updated information about the disease; served as chairman of the District’s AIDS Advisory Committee; gave regular talks to federal and medical groups about HIV/AIDS; was on the panel of DC’s first HIV/AIDS public forum at Lisner Auditorium in 1983 (both John Willig and Ray Engebretsen being his patients); and even took Mother Teresa on a tour around GWU Hospital to visit AIDS patients. DiGioia shares how being a gay doctor during the AIDS epidemic made him a better doctor in general, for he learned how to truly empathize with his patients, and offer them more holistic care. Towards the end of the interview, DiGioia raises concerns regarding the current situation of HIV/AIDS healthcare in 2007. He highlights the need for improved community education and empowerment in the gay community, as well as a major overhaul of the increasingly bureaucratized, unaffordable, and impersonal United States healthcare system making HIV/AIDS treatment inaccessible for so many Americans. This is a conversation between Dr. Richard DiGioia and an interviewer, discussing Dr. DiGioia's involvement in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Washington DC. Dr. DiGioia shares his experiences as a doctor at the Gay Men's VD clinic and later as a primary care physician treating HIV patients. Native Washingtonian Kwabena Rainey Cheeks, active in his community since childhood, tells the story of his life in activism, from helping those in his neighborhood as a child, to becoming a Minister and giving back well into adulthood. Cheeks grew up in martial arts, growing to be ranked top ten nationally. As one of the original founders of the Clubhouse, one of Washington’s most prominent Gay dance clubs in the 80’s, Cheeks interacted with many members of the community from famous ballet dancer Rudolf Nurevev to singer Patti LaBelle. Cheeks founded Us Helping Us, a nonprofit organization focused on helping those in the community affected with AIDS. Later in life he became a minister and founded the church Inner Light Unity Fellowship Church, which works to be an accepting community organization. Through the Church, Cheeks still to this day leads his community through mentorship, retreats, and activism, while continuing to create what he describes as heaven on Earth in the form of enjoying life. Donald Burch III is an African American from Detroit. Donald tested positive for HIV in 1985. His disease seems to have very little to no effect on the influentiality he wishes his life to have, as he continues to strive for prosperous opportunities beyond his home in Detroit. Upon his relief of his military duties due to the awareness of his disease, he unsurprisingly makes way to Washington DC. Faith Temple becomes a common place of reference for Donald, for it had been the place he claims to be his place of worship and shelter when he was most unfortunate. Donald also discusses things such as where he went for fun, how he made friends and the places they went, his love life, and what he did to give back to the community.
