Mary Jean Collins lead during the foundational years of the National Organization for Women (NOW) and as her time progressed in Washington, she found herself leading not just in the queer community, but in the city and the country as a whole. Motivated by her Catholic upbringing and her family’s strong values in grassroots activism, Collins grew up dedicated to working to better the community around her. Especially influenced by the Catholic nuns in her city, she came to NOW inspired by the fact that it was the first organization she had seen created and run by empowered women. Collins also talks about her experiences as a Lesbian during the late twentieth century, and the changes and developments she herself witnessed. I can't stop fighting racism, because no matter how old I get I'm still going to be black. I can't stop fighting [sexism] because no matter how old I get I'm still going to be a woman. I can't stop fighting some of the other isms I see because I can't change those things. I'm going to change the culture and begin to work with people who want to change the culture." "I was victimized all my life behind this bullshit called racism, sexism, homophobia. I put names on my pain. I had not done that. If there was anything that changed my life more than my sexuality, it was understanding that there was a place to take my pain." Abstract A summary of the resource. Wanda Alston was an officer in the cabinet to Mayor Anthony Williams liaising between the mayor and the LGBTQ community from 2001 until she was murdered in March 2005. She was at the peak of a career in public service which had taken her to senior positions in the National Organization of Women (1992-1996)and in the Human Rights Campaign Fund. Along the way Wanda learned how to handle oppression by building coalitions and by reaching out to create safe places for others. Her vision was not necessarily political but one of healing and supporting and reaching out. When she organized the 1997 Black Pride event for CLOAVE (Collective Lesbians of African-Descent, Voices Everywhere) it " was about bringing people together from anywhere." Wanda moved to DC from Newport News in 1985, after a difficult and unsupported coming out. In DC, she quickly moved into the LGBTQ community with the help of her gay brother. By the end of the decade she was involved with the DC Coalition of Black Lesbians and Gays and by mid-decade was co-chair (with Darren Buckner). She volunteered at the National Organization of Women (NOW) in the early 90s and within days was a special assistant to Patricia Ireland, head of NOW. Following NOW, she joined the staff of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) in 1996. Her HRC experience gave a good overview of the gay political movement, one gave her important experience in marketing and fundraising but also one that left her feeling "I got to see who and what I didn’t want to be like." She earned her MBA from Southeastern University and her BA in Mass Communications from Norfolk State University in Virginia. She discovered the National Organization of Women (NOW) at a feminist demonstration while living in Reading, PA in 1970. On her return to Washington, DC she joined NOW-DC and quickly became involved in its activities. With others, she founded the DC-NOW Sexuality Task Force. Shortly thereafter, she helped found Capitol Hill NOW and was its first president. In 1973, she became involved in the campaign to pass DC's first human rights act, Title 34, and testified before the DC Council in support of the act as a board member of the local NOW chapter. Recalls the period as one of "strong coalition between NOW and the gay community." In addition to copies of The Insider, her papers include an insightful account of life as a lesbian in the Mattachine Society of Washington, an account of lesbians in NOW. The papers also include her testimony (May 10, 1973) in support of Title 34 and subsequent testimony (June 7, 1973) supporting the addition of credit and finance protection to Title 34. Title A name given to the resource Gay Women's Alternative, GWA-DC (Series III) Description An account of the resource Documents relating to the Gay Women's Alternative of DC from 1980 to 1993. includes committee reports, ephemera, newspaper clippings and program announcements. From 1981 to 1993, the Gay Women's Alternative of D.C. served as an essential educational and social focus for the metropolitan area's lesbian community. The organization dedicated itself to presenting an alternative to the closet and to the bars for the area's women, by providing lectures, social events, and discussions, often at the Washington Ethical Society. GWCDC became known for its dances for women, particularly its signature Spring Cotillion, and for its involvement with other women's events in the area including the summer Sisterfire musical extravaganzas and the Passages conferences. In 1985, GWA-DC presented its first conference. The initial organizers included Ina Alterman, Trish Bangert, Bonnie Becker, Susan Geiger, Maryl Kerley, Ann Meltzer, Lil Russo, and Joyce Sideman.
