Now a retired school Fairfax County school teacher, Robert Rigby Jr. has spent his career advocating for queer youth. His advocacy work helped popularize and make more accessible local high school chapters of GSA and anti-discrimination/anti-harassment policies. Rigby helped organize proms, barbecues, and conferences for queer youth in Fairfax County. Part of his advocacy work is also advocating for housing for vulnerable queer youth, and the importance of having a safe place for homeless youth or youth in unsafe home environments. Rigby discusses the relationship the school environment has had for queer youth and staff overtime and how social reception of queer people has changed. Rigby also discusses his coming out journey, as someone who came out fully in his thirties as well as discussing how his experiences with reparative/conversion therapy has inspired his advocacy work. He talks about how queer friendly faith has helped him and accept his queerness and how important it was that he had an outlet like that. Rigby briefly talks about his first pride and pride’s evolution in Northern Virginia as well as the gay rugby team, “The Renegades”. A lifelong DC resident, Ra Amin discovered D.C.’s LGBTQ community while a student at University of Maryland in the 1980s through bars like Tracks, Lost and Found, and Badlands. This led him to discover the city’s Black LGBTQ community at Bachelor’s Mill and he attended the first Black Pride in 1991 at Banneker Field. During the HIV-AIDS epidemic, Amin worked for the DC Department of Corrections and Department of Health working with communities most affected by HIV-AIDS. Through this work, he became a trained massage therapist and partnered with Whitman-Walker Health and Us Helping Us to provide massage therapy for people living with and treating HIV and AIDS. After a bicycle accident left him unable to work in 2015, he rededicated himself to community involvement and living authentically as part of the LGBTQ+ community. He became an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner and member of the ANC Rainbow Caucus and a volunteer with the Rainbow History Project. In these audio clips, John Hannay recounts his journey working in LGBTQ+ spaces in the D.C. metro area. Hailing from Rochester, New York with an educational background in theological studies, Hannay began his career working with the Coalition for the Homeless at the onset of the AIDS epidemic. He then held the first position devoted solely to combatting the AIDS epidemic at the community staple Whitman Walker clinic, where he focused on building relationships between government-based public health structures and non-profit organizations, as well as educating the gay community and public health community about each other. He then worked for SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders), serving as their first paid professional staff, where he focused on developing a volunteer core to run educational and support groups around health, mental health, and family and relationship issues. He then worked for the Maryland Department of Health’s AIDS program, focusing on developing educational programming to disseminate information about the AIDS virus to affected communities and the broader community. Following his time at the Maryland Department of Health, Hannay helped revive the Gay and Lesbian Community Center in Baltimore. He now works for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, where he continues to work on projects surrounding HIV and AIDS. While recounting his storied career, Hannay touches upon the influence of religion, family, and community in his life as both a professional and a gay man living through the AIDS epidemic. He interjects with anecdotes about other accomplishments in his storied career, always connecting them back to how it fits into the larger picture of the movement he was fighting for and the work he was doing. From what started as a college kid seeking out the thrills of LGBTQ nightlife, to what transformed into a flourishing lifetime career, Ed Bailey details the intricacies of running a gay bar in Washington DC. Beginning with his first job DJ-ing at Tracks in the early ‘90s, Bailey explains how the super-nightclub became a massively influential safe space for the community. Bailey goes on to discuss his own business ventures, spanning the late ‘90s up to present day 2022, as the owner of many gay bars with business partner John Guggenmos. In the second half of his interview, Bailey talks extensively on the “Death of the Gay Bar” both in the physical and philosophical sense. With the declining need for exclusively LGBTQ spaces, Bailey insists that gay bars must adapt to the constant evolution of the community. Bernie Delia, resident of Washington, DC since 1982, openly expressing as a gay man 3 years after. Two years after coming out, Bernie began serving the LBGTQ+ community in many different ways. Bernie took an interest in history and politics very early in life, remembering many moments with his parents discussing elections and such. From as long as he could remember, becoming a DC resident had always been the plan. He would make this possible after going to law school, which helped him develop many of the skills and connections that he would use to prevail later on. As a member of the Dignity Committee Chairs, member of the Justice Department for Clinton Administration, hostess of the Catholic Church, and other positions of influence, Bernie has managed to lead well. Bernie also shares a variety of different stories, ranging from his perception of the aids crisis and the overall growth of the LGBTQ+ community, to how he has been able to facilitate change even when there may have seemed to be no presidential hope for such.
