Her family relocated to Silver Spring, Maryland in 1980. In 1981, while she was attending college at Sarah Lawrence, Goodman’s daughter came out as a lesbian. This event triggered Goodman’s journey as an activist on behalf of the LGBT community. She was one of the founding members of the Metro Washington DC chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). From 1983-1988 she was the chapter head, PFLAG-DC. In 1988, she was elected to National Chair of the PFLAG Federation, a position in which she served until 1992. In 1989, she sent a series of letters to then-First Lady, Barbara Bush, believing that the First Lady would respond. Mrs. Bush did respond, writing ““I firmly believe that we cannot tolerate discrimination against any individuals or groups in our country. Such treatment always brings with it pain and perpetuates intolerance.” This statement may be the first example of a positive statement about gay people to come from any White House. Goodman has continued her pioneering activism throughout her life, lecturing and organizing in support of the rights of LGBT persons and providing a venue for their parents, siblings, relatives, and friends to engage with one another. During this interview he discussed his life as a gay man in Washington D.C. in the 1960s; both as a writer and left-wing activist. Allen Young had a varied career in Washington; he worked with the Washington Post for a brief period and then began working with the underground press, specifically The Liberation News Service. Young also discussed different areas concerned with the LGBT community, including: cruising spots like the YMCA, The Block, Leon’s Chicken Hut, The Hideaway, The Block, and the P Street Beach. He also described his perspective on the riots in Washington D.C. following the assassination of Martin Luther King. Young moved out of Washington D.C. in 1968 after the Liberation News Service moved to New York City. Allen Young also worked with the leaders of the first march on Washington in 1979, and attended many of the other marches on Washington as a part of the LGBT community. He concluded the interview by offering a glimpse into what life for a gay man could be like in Washington D.C. and how segregated and divided Washington was. Title A name given to the resource Oral history interview with Barbara Chinn Description An account of the resource <div> <div> Chinn grew up in Northwest Washington, DC and became cognizant of her differing sexuality during her childhood, however she did not connect with the LGBT community until young adulthood. When she was around nineteen or twenty years old, a significant other introduced her to the club scene on Irving Street. She and her friends frequented placed like Steve’s, Kenyan’s Bar and Grill, Bob’s Inn, Louis and the Rogue, and the Otherside. She was involved in social clubs called the Best of Washington (a historically African American LGBT social club) and the 5 Point 5(around 5:30min?). Some of these organizations threw house parties as a means of safe socialization. During her house party days, Chinn lived in Congress Heights with her partner. In 1991, she used her experience of living east of the river to convince the board of the Max Robinson Center that there was need for LGBT-centered healthcare in that area. The Max Robinson Center opened soon after in Southeast DC 1992. Chinn became involved with DC’s response to the AIDS crisis when her friends were diagnosed with the disease in 1981 and 1982. At the time, Chinn was working in the field of property management where her main interaction with the LGBT community was the protection of the anonymity of gay tenants. After the losses of her friends to AIDS, Chinn was driven to redirect her skillsets into helping the community. She applied to be the housing director at Whitman-Walker clinic in 1987. As housing director for the Whitman-Walker clinics, Chinn managed five properties in northwestern DC—including Robert N. Swartz, M.D. House, and a number of other locations sponsored by the Swartz Housing Services. These properties housed the clinic’s patients. Chinn became educated about AIDS through personal experiences with friends and in the field as an employee of Whitman-Walker. She began giving educational talks about HIV with ICCAN and Impact DC. Eventually, she was promoted by Whitman-Walker to deputy executive director and director of prevention, education, and support services. In the 1990s, Chinn was on the planning committee to negotiate the location of the next clinic, to be named the Max Robinson Center. She cites the choice of location as a paradoxical issue, much debated within the gay African American community where the clinic was to be situated. The clinic needed to be visible to the community stricken with AIDS, but not so visible that the patients would be under scrutiny. When the new clinic was opened, they were met with hostility from local residents, churches, and groups worried that Whitman-Walker would “bring HIV to [their] community.” Part of the job was convincing the outlying community that Whitman-Walker was there to treat those already infected. Title A name given to the resource Oral history interview with Barbara Lewis, 1948- Description An account of the resource Barbara Lewis arrived in Washington, DC in 1966 to attend George Washington University. When she graduated in the summer of 1970, she travelled across the country with her boyfriend—finishing the trip on the West Coast. While in California, Lewis experienced a health issue that required her to visit the Women’s Health Collective in Berkeley. This experience introduced her to feminism and women’s health, changing the course of her life. Lewis returned to Washington, DC in 1971 and became involved with the Washington Free Clinic then located in the basement of the Georgetown Lutheran Church. Made up entirely of volunteers, the clinic was the first facility on the East Coast to offer free healthcare, especially those offered for women. Lewis trained new volunteers and contributed to the management collective at the clinic. In May of 1972, Lewis came out as a lesbian after attending a women’s dance organized by a group of lesbians active in DC. This occasion was the first time Lewis had interacted with the LGBT community on a large scale. Determined to connect more with the lesbian community, Lewis joined a softball league called the PJMs (named after Peggy Jane Mogley) and sponsored by Lamma’s, a women’s craft and jewelry shop owned by Judy Winsett and Leslie Reeves—later Mary Farmer. She also began guitar lessons with lesbian folk singer Meg Christian in 1972, facilitating her entrance into the DC music scene. Between the 1970s and 1990s, Lewis was involved with three different women’s bands—however her claim to fame was not on guitar, but as one of the only female drummers in DC. The first band she was involved with was inspired by a performance given by New Haven’s Women’s Liberation Rock and Roll Band at American University in February of 1975. Known as Hysteria, Lewis performed with Terri Clark, Diane Gosler, Phyllis Tellfaire, and Hellen Horton. Hysteria played at a variety of women’s events and dances, including sets at Club Madame and the Women’s Festival of Champaign-Urbana, IL in 1975. In 1984, Lewis began playing with Toshi Reagon and the Agitones. From 1987-1992, she played with Jennie McKnight, Liz Buchal, and Andrea Weatherhead in a band named Syzygy. They recorded one vinyl album in 1986. In 1975, Lewis was accepted at Howard University to become a physician’s assistant. Soon after graduating, Lewis worked in the Emergency Room at Howard University Hospital until she left in 1989 to perform clinical trials at GW (George Washington Research Center) to find a treatment for HIV. In 1978, Lewis was recruited by Whitman-Walker to form a clinic that catered to gays and lesbians. She worked in the clinic until 1983, when the facility closed due to financial issues resulting from the influx of patients with AIDS. She returned to work with HIV and lesbian health clinics at Whitman-Walker in 2000 and continues to hold this position as of the date of this recording. Lewis has given up softball and drumming to pursue her interests in golf and country western dancing, which she took up in 1993. She is also involved with a lesbian Jewish group that she formed with a group of friends in 1980 as a way to rediscover their Jewish roots. Bruce Pennington commences this audio file with the back story of when he realized he was gay and how that impacted him in North Dakota at the time. Pennington then discusses the anti-Vietnam War movement. He speaks about his life as a student at the University of North Dakota in 1968 and how he was visited while he was there by Ray Mongal, the co-founder of Liberation Move Service (LMS). Pennington then discusses his move to Washington, D.C. He explains his initial living situation on church street off of the 17th street neighborhood. Pennington then remembers the suicide of Marshall Broom. Penington begins to discuss the pre-stonewall era before he goes into detail about his life of homelessness in D.C. After telling his homelessness experience, Pennington speaks about bars he frequently visited and were popular in the D.C. area: 1832 (owned by Jonny and Kirby), Mr. Henry’s, and Hideaway. He goes into detail about the different environments of the bars at the time and the rules that were implemented. Pennington speaks on his experience in Georgetown - specifically at the Georgetown Grill. After, he goes into detail about the different cruising areas around D.C.; such as Dupont Circle, Iwo Jima memorial, Chicken Hut, Pixies, and other neighborhoods and areas. Pennington recalls his relationship with Margo MacGregor. Pennington then speaks about his relationship with Frank Kameny and the relationship between the gay community and the military. Pennington then shares about the creation of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) - D.C. and explains the living situation with six other members of the GLF. Members that were mentioned: David Aiken, Michael Ferri, Taylor Kirkland, Jose Ramos, Gil Taylor, and Joel Colimody. He mentioned another GLF member, Dr. Tim Kalmosy, who was the GLF Black Panther connection. Pennington then discusses his relationship with Huey Newton - another member of the Black Panther Party. Carlene Cheatam moved from New York to Washington, D.C. with a friend in the 1970s to try and find a job. Through that process, she began digging out a community through softball, which led to her beginning to be political active. Cheatam was first involved with organizing through the Black community. She was involved with the creation of the National Black Independence Party and involved with Operation PUSH. The D.C. Coalition of Black Gays was her entrance into queer issues in an organizing lens. She would go to the coffeehouse to hang out with other queer people and be social, talk about political issues and rights. She was a member of Saphire Sapphos, a queer women’s group. This was the first time being political in her life, and Cheatam was one of the few women politically active in queer issues at the time. This meant she easily slipped into leadership roles in these organizations. She was co-chair of both the D.C. Coalition and the Eleanor Roosevelt small Democratic Club. Despite all of these roles, Cheatam views herself as an organizer not a political person. She prefers to make things work, to do work, than to play the political game. In 1983, she coordinated the annual DC Capital Pride, working on outreach to people of color in the community. Previously, the event had been mostly white people, and she was looking to change that. After her experience there, she contributed and worked on outreach for the Black Pride Experience. Cheatam describes this job as her favorite, stating she is proud of her work and success with this job. The initial objective of the organization was to raise money to HIV/AIDS organizations that were helping the black community. She was the coordinator in 1991, and raised $11k to give to HIV/AIDS organizations. Cheatam also mentioned that she thinks the current administration of this organization does not see the value of giving back, focusing instead on throwing a party and using the money raised for that. After organizing, she worked for D.C. Mayor Williams. She worked on his campaign and worked in his administration as gay and lesbian outreach director and then in the Department of Human Services. Cheatam mentioned that she believes they were not utilizing the office in the best way, instead prioritizing politics over real outreach efforts. When asked about men and women working together, she talks about it being more difficult for women to fit into organizing and queer spaces. She talks about women having children or other responsibilities. Men, even gay men, have privilege. They take over social situations, etc. She also talked about intersectionalist and hierarchy in media. She stated that we needed an Ellen before we could have a black gay person on tv. Comedy uniquely did most of his performances as a man, and because of his time in and out of the different houses he was able to provide firsthand knowledge on many different subcommunities in the city. Spector, originally from Toms River, New Jersey, moved to DC in 1976 to attend American University. Although Spector was a self-described “straight girl” during her college years, she nonetheless enjoyed going out to LGBT clubs such as The Pier and The Clubhouse for the disco and funk music. It was during this time that Spector was first introduced to the lesbian community by coworkers and friends, and began to realize her own attraction to women. Spector came out in 1983, and threw herself into the DC LGBT scene, spending her weekends partying and DJing at clubs such as The Phase, Hung Jury, Tracks, and The Other Side, and involving herself in lesbian groups such as The Gay Women’s Alternative and Roadwork. In 1984, Cheryl’s brother Stan was diagnosed with AIDS, and took his life a year later. Her brother’s death spurred Spector to become involved in queer and HIV/AIDS activism in DC, and in 1987 Spector joined the local planning committee for The Second National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights. After the march, Spector helped co-found OUT (“Oppression Under Target”), and subsequently participated in various actions around DC protesting anti-LGBT discrimination and demanding the government acknowledge the AIDS crisis. Spector later also became involved with the DC chapters of ACT UP and Queer Nation, and continued finding new and creative ways to protest the government’s inaction, spread awareness about safe sex, and criticize anti-LGBT legislation. Spector often used her public relations and media expertise to document and promote these actions.
