In this interview, Alan Sharpe discusses his journey in being a Black and gay member of the LGBTQ+ community–in the world of stage and film. His story begins in St. Louis, Missouri and shifts to Washington, D.C., exposing him to a multitude of opportunities for expression. Sharpe went to Boston University to study Film and TV as well as Public Education. He expressed although he was excited and eager to learn–undergraduates were limited from making films since only graduate students were allowed to utilize equipment. It was then that Sharpe decided to commit to theater and so the journey of being a young, poor, Black gay in the theater industry began. Sharpe had an abundance of creative expression ideas yet due to social, political, and financial factors–his mind was confined. Despite numerous obstacles, Sharpe contributed to, initiated, and executed several works with Afro-homo, HIV+, LGBTQ+ concepts, and more. Sharpe strives to help raise awareness about the intersectionality of Blacks, gays, homelessness, early interactions with the criminal justice system or incarceration, and adolescence journey and beyond. The well-known “gender-blender”, self-identifying two-spirited, Black, gay longterm/long time DC community activist, Rayceen Pendarvis, discusses community contribution and hardships of life. From the Stonewall Riots in the late ‘60s to “Gangster Queens with an Attitude” to her affiliation with SWERV Magazine and “Reel Affirmations” to the launch of The Ask Rayceen Show, Pendarvis recollects historical memories and emphasizes the significance of LGBTQ+ activism across decades of battles. Born and raised in Washington DC, the proud native expresses how LGBTQ+ affirming her city is and in what ways it has become that way. She expands on what this means for generations to come, while voicing her personal experience coming out, evolving from Raymond to Rayceen, and being a Black, gay, and faithful father of 5, grandfather of 2, and mother for many. Pendarvis expands upon living up to her other names, “Queen of the Shameless Plugs”, “earth mother to the gays”, and such through speaking her inspirational spiritual beliefs and embracing philosophical ideas. Donald Button came to DC in late 1970 from New York City where he had been active in the Gay Activists Alliance. In DC he hung out with the GLF group. In DC he met Paul ‘Moonbeam’ Bartels who didn’t live in the GLF house. Button lived in the GLF House at 1620 S St NW from the Spring of 1971 and moved out in 1972. Life at 1620 was “chaotic.” The ‘kingpins’ in 1620 were Michael Ferri and Bruce Pennington. After Ferri moved to the Skyline Faggots collective at 1624 S St the dynamics at 1620 changed somewhat. Button moved to a group house in the Mt. Pleasant area. The Skyline Faggots were older, more serious, more introspective, according to Button. They focused more on what does being a man, a gay man, mean. Button was part of the zaps against the APA at the Shoreham/Wardman?. Button was also active in the gay speakers bureau, talking to schools and youth. Mayday GLF’s planning was done at Grace Church in Georgetown. Demo spot as on the M St bridge. There were police infiltrators in the GLF group. They briefly blocked the bridge and when the cops came and shot tear gas they split. A Georgetown housewife offered to hide them and when they got to her door slammed it shut. Button was one of those arrested on the way to the Vietnamese embassy on the second day (May 4th). They were held at 23rd and L until taken to jail. The cells were so crowded that they had to take turns sitting down. They were held less than 24 hours and passed the time signing do wop tunes and eating peanut butter and baloney sandwiches. Button later worked with SAJA’s youth outreach and worked with Loraine Hutchins. He was on a job coop project. For a while he lived with Loraine in a group home in Mt Pleasant. Lampos grew up in Northern Virginia and went to college at the University of Virginia before moving to the district. He talked about how, when he was in college, gay groups had started popping up and he joined the one at UVA. They had regular meetings and scheduled big dances to create and celebrate community, even though many of these people were not out to family or even friends at the time. After moving to DC, Lee looked for ways to get connected with and involved in the gay community and found out about the gay and lesbian switchboard, a phone hotline staffed by volunteers to share information about gay-friendly places, activities, businesses, and services. The switchboard was founded in the 7ps but Lampos joined in the late 80s when a lot of people were getting involved. Both men and women worked at the switchboard, with volunteer numbers getting up to 40+ at the peak of operations in the mid 1980s. Lee listed a few of the locations the switchboard worked out of before shutting down in the late 90s. These included a community center at 17th & R streets, another community center int eh early 90s at Massachusetts and N street, they also had trainings at the director’s house on Logan Circle and Rhode Island Avenue and moved to yet another community center on M & 18th street before getting their own office in an old high rise building at 16th and P streets. Lampos discussed how the switchboard became a conduit for all kinds of resources and information about and for the gay and lesbian community in DC and shared a list of restaurants, bars, and businesses that were gay friendly from the 80s to the early 2000s. These included Lambda Rising, Freddy’s, The Eagle, The Green Lantern, Rummington’s, The Phase, Llamas Bookstore, and Banana Cafe. Volunteers utilized publications like The Blade and the gay yellow pages, as well as tips from community members to put together their notebook of resources. They also created an official guidebook for the community as well, and attended conferences with other gay and lesbian hotline workers in New York City. Not only did the switchboard provide information and point people in the direction of the resources they needed, the volunteers were also available to talk people through other general problems of being a gay person at the time - coming out, relationship problems, talking with community members, dealing with AIDS in the community, and much more. When asked why a lot of the gay bars, restaurants, and other businesses have since closed, Lee talk through how the community has come a long way and we no longer need as many specific places that are gay-friendly, because most places are gay-friendly. Although he lamented the loss of these secret, under-the-radar type spaces, Lee talked about how just in his lifetime he went from being nervous when seeing two men holding hands in public to that being accepted and normal in most of our everyday lives. Daniel Hays, longtime board member of the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance (AGLA), talks about his upbringing and experience living in Missouri and how he transitioned to life in Washington, D.C. He discusses how he got involved with AGLA and the types of outreach and work he has engaged in as part of the team, as well as his experience as a drag queen. Daniel Hays was born in Central Missouri, working in politics there before moving to D.C. 15 years ago. Upon arrival in D.C., Daniel was soon connected with the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance (AGLA) where he became the Vice President, and has been on the board ever since. Growing up in Missouri in a very religious, conservative, small town region was an influence on his drag persona, Muffy - this persona was in some ways a therapeutic version of everything he disliked about Christianity. While Daniel still considers himself a Christian, his experience coming out as gay after college and becoming deeply involved in the queer community as a member of AGLA and as a drag queen has led him to identify with a very different version of Christianity than was pushed on him as a child. Prior to AGLA, Daniel had a multitude of political experience - including being a Chief of Staff at the Missouri House of Representatives, and working for the Missouri Department of Labor. This political background, he believes, prepared him for his leading role at AGLA. Within AGLA, Daniel quickly advanced from Vice President to President, which he has served 4 terms as. Moving from involvement in LGBTQ+ organizations in Missouri to D.C. showed Daniel that the prevalence and amount of LGBTQ+ organizations in D.C. leads to a struggle to have volunteers and members be actively involved in. He notes that especially in Arlington, which is a very progressive and LGBTQ+ area, some people in the community take for granted the rights that they enjoy and therefore tend to be less activist. As President of AGLA, this is something Daniel had to contend with. Now, many of the LGBTQ+ organizations that were around when Daniel joined AGLA no longer exist - this led AGLA to unofficially expand their coverage area to confront the changing landscape of activist organizations. Daniel then goes on to talk about his experience as a drag queen, considering himself “old school drag”. He has done drag fundraisers for various causes and has found that people turn out for those. He helped to create the Miss Arlington Pageant for drag queens as part of AGLA, which has now been going on for 10 years. In his own personal life, Daniel spoke about how influential his drag family was as mentors, and how he had quit drag before moving to Arlington but got back into it in 2008. Daniel is big on using drag as a positive outreach tool, and hopes to increase AGLA’s activism in other LGBTQ+ spaces: particularly the fetish community and trans community. He speaks about how the LGBTQ+ community can often be divisive among itself, and how he thinks it is important for AGLA and other organizations to bring people together from different communities. Through AGLA, Daniel has been able to engage in community activism working with other organizations, such as Equality Virginia and Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). He also spoke about AGLA’s scholarship program, which provides a scholarship yearly to a high school senior, as well as some of AGLA’s keystone events including the pageant and the Equality Awards. Recounting his time at Georgetown University, Campbell explains how he initially divided his social life between his teammates on the sailing team and the members of the GU-Pride before coming out late-freshman year. He acknowledges how coming out to his family played a key role in his decision to be out to his college friends. After college, Campbell discusses his career in politics. Having lived through historic LGBT milestones, such as California’s Prop 8 and the Supreme Courts ruling on same-sex marriage, Campbell urges the youth of the LGBT community, especially following the 2016 election, to continue to strive for progress, unity, and hope for the future. Arriving in Washington DC in 1978, Abdulahad recounts her contributions to various social activist groups and especially highlights her relations to artist and social developments in the city. Title A name given to the resource Oral History Interview with Michelle Zavos, 1951- Description An account of the resource Michele Zavos is a highly successful LGBTQ+ and family law attorney based in D.C., who was originally from Pittsburgh. She worked at several different political groups before developing her law practice for working with individuals and talks about her experience being politically involved and what steps got her where she is today. She also discusses her experience being a lesbian in D.C., adopting a child, and navigating the legal field with a queer identity. Abstract A summary of the resource. Michele Zavros was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but lived all over the world growing up. She attended University of Wisconsin for college during the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement - a very politically active time. The events during this time shaped her life path enormously, and she was more interested in political activism than school. She graduated with a degree in history and moved to D.C. in 1974, where she was surrounded by like-minded political groups and was even part of a Marxist study group. She also was taking karate and started a women’s karate magazine called Black Belt Women - but it was not only about karate, but also political. It was around this time that she came out and was just starting to get involved in the lesbian community in Washington D.C. Michele then decided her next step would be to go to law school and she attended to Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law. It was during her time at law school that she became interested in prison work - she worked for the ACLU Prison Project during a summer, which sued prisons nationally for bad conditions and other issues. It was this experience that made her truly understand the deeper-rooted problems in this country. From there, she worked in Georgia in 1979 doing prison work and then moved to Maryland for the Maryland Prison Project. She stayed there for two and a half years, visiting almost every single prison and jail in the entire state of Maryland - but this work was rigorous and took a toll mentally, so she quit. Michele realized that unlike other lawyers she knew, she didn’t care about becoming a millionaire or getting to argue cases before the Supreme Court. She just wanted to help people and liked working for individuals. She got a job at a small, very progressive law firm in D.C. and started doing pro-bono work during the AIDS epidemic. It was also this time, when her and her partner were around 30, that they decided they wanted kids, which was extremely uncommon at the time as a lesbian couple. So, they started a group called the Maybe Baby Group, which later became the Mothers Group. All of those who stayed in the group ended up having kids. They met every Tuesday for 10 years, discussing their experiences being lesbian partnerships with children, but also becoming a close-knit group. Eventually, Michele started her own law firm with one of her previous professors, which she worked at for around 5 years. Their firm represented huge LGBTQ+ organizations in Washington D.C. and engaged in lots of community work. She took a sabbatical from the firm, and during the time she was on a federal judicial nominating commission, and also spent time as the Director of the AIDS coordination project which involved lots of policy work. But this showed her that she wanted to work with individuals again. She went back to developing her practice, handling LGBTQ+ cases and adoption cases, representing people in both D.C. and Maryland. She took several test cases for gay marriage, even arguing one case before the Maryland Court of Appeals that she won - this case meant that Maryland had to recognize gay marriages that were formed outside the state, an important step. She discusses her experiences with several specific cases she worked as an LGBTQ+ and family law attorney, as well as the difficulties she faced being a lesbian lawyer in the 1980s. Abstract A summary of the resource. Bill Wooby moved to Washington, D.C., from New York in his early 20s, after serving in the Army. He worked at Lost and Found and Pier 9, both gay establishments. Later, he owned The Collector Art Gallery Restaurant, first on U St and then in Dupont Circle.
