Title A name given to the resource Oral History with Eric Rosenthal and Jeffrey Menzer Description An account of the resource Eric Rosenthal, a doctor, and Jeffrey Menzer, a nurse, recount their life in DC, starting with their political advocacy work with the Gay Rights National Lobby and the Human Rights Campaign Fund (Eric) and the National Council on Women and Girls, and Business Professional Women (Jeffrey). They later got involved with local DC politics through the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club. Through Project CHAMP at Children’s National Hospital, they fostered a child with AIDS. This sparked their professional development in medicine. Abstract A summary of the resource. Jeffrey Menzer moved to Washington, DC in 1982 after college seeking work in political advocacy. He worked with the National Council on Women and Girls and later with Business Professional Women (BPW) on topics such as Title IX and the Equal Rights Amendment. Eric Rosenthal worked with Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) in Pennsylvania, serving on the national board of ADA for several years. Through his volunteering with the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Democratic Clubs, Eric moved to DC in 1984. Eric worked at the Gay Rights National Lobby (focused on political advocacy and lobbying) and as an early employee of the Human Rights Campaign Fund (later, Human Rights Campaign and focused on political fundraising). He was there when the two organizations merged into HRCF. Eric and Jeffrey met in 1984 while campaigning for Jane Wells-Schooley in Pennsylvania's 15th Congressional District. They spoke about how a major focus in the early 1980s was to pass the Gay and Lesbian Civil Rights Bill (introduced in 1974) but that the HIV/AIDS crisis took precedence. They noted that the crisis opened up political support and visibility for gay rights in specific ways. For example, Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) was supportive of the gay community on HIV/AIDS issues but hadn’t been on gay civil rights. Eric and Jeffrey became involved in the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance (GLAA). They noted the support Mayor Marion Berry gave to the LGBT community in DC. They both worked on Barry’s 1986 reelection campaign and noted the influence of gay city officials such as Richard Molsby. Jeffrey got a job with DC’s AIDS Program Coordination Office and helped set up DC’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program. Eric and Jeffrey volunteered with Project CHAMP at Children’s National to help children with AIDS, who were stigmatized at the time. They noted the support of people like Tommy Wells who headed the DC Consortium of Child Welfare and led the program to match foster families with children affected by AIDS. They fostered a child named Joshua who later passed. Their experience led Eric to go to medical school (he is now a pediatrician) and Jeffrey to nursing school. Jeffrey ran an 8 year study that looked at ways to support children with HIV/AIDS. One of the outcomes of this study was guardianship legislation in DC that allowed terminally ill parents to designate a guardian for their children. They spoke about the child they adopted in 2007 and ended with their views on the gay rights movement today. Born in 1954 and moving from Chicago to DC after college, Patrick Crowley describes his life in DC in four ten year increments. Though initially excited to live out and proud, he reflects on his first ten years in DC as a time where he remained in the closet and struggled with alcoholism. Beginning the next ten year increment, Mr. Crowley briefly describes a series of revelations that led him to change course in his life and find community through DC’s gay AA network. Becoming known for finding speakers and putting together events, he identifies his third ten year phase as renovating the Congressional Cemetery in Capitol Hill. He describes his leadership on the board of the Cemetery and how he connected with the “Gay Ghetto” of gay men buried in the cemetery, including Leonard Matlovich and Frank Kameny. After finishing his time as Chair of the Cemetery’s board due to term limits, he briefly describes his fourth ten years as a time of career development and notes his involvement with the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. Keith talked about his experience moving into DC in the late 80s, in the middle of the AIDS crisis. Keith talked about founding the DC Gay and Lesbian Film Festival in 1991 and the challenges associated with it. Keith also talked about running DC Pride in 1995 by shifting it to be in downtown DC and the struggle to bring Pride into the center of DC political culture. Audio 1 In this transcript, Peter Edwards shares his experiences of living as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in Washington DC. He discusses his journey of coming out as a gay man and finding a sense of community and acceptance in DC, while conversely sharing his experiences as an insecure gay teenager struggling with his sexuality in the 1980s. Despite the challenges, Edwards found community in the now-defunct gay rodeo, country western dancing, and the Lesbian and Gay chorus of Washington. The conversation also touches upon dating in DC. Overall, the transcript highlights the challenges and joys of living as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in Washington DC and the importance of finding a sense of community and acceptance. Audio 2 In this transcript, Peter Edwards discusses his involvement with Dignity DC, an organization for Catholic LGBTQ+ individuals. Edwards talks about the history of Dignity, including its origins and its move from Georgetown University to St. Margaret Episcopal Church. He shares his personal experiences attending Dignity, emphasizing the sense of belonging he felt and the importance of the organization for LGBTQ+ individuals who may feel alone or isolated. Edwards also discusses the activities and outreach efforts of Dignity, such as participating in local Pride events, organizing community dinners, and providing support during times of tragedy. Additionally, Edwards expresses commitment to the organization through his role as a leader within the community. Finally, Edwards mentions the challenges faced by Dignity in attracting younger members and diversifying the congregation, and emphasizes the ongoing need for a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQ+ individuals within the Catholic faith. Audio 3 In this transcript, Peter Edwards discusses his involvement with the gay switchboard in the 1980s. The gay switchboard provided information and support to the LGBTQ+ community at a time when resources like the internet and smartphones did not exist. They operated a phone line, offering information on bars, social opportunities, and roommate connections. The switchboard also focused on peer counseling, providing a safe space for people to talk about their feelings and struggles. Larry discussed growing up in the Maryland suburbs and his attachment to the DC metropolitan area. He then talked about coming out, and his experience being out professionally in the 1980s. Larry also discussed his experience with the Couples Support group in the late 80s and early 90s. He then moved on to talk about his relationship with his husband, and the health struggles his husband has faced. He spoke on their marriage, and how it impacted the course of his life. Finally, Larry talked about the changes in the queer community in recent years and how his relationship with being out as a gay man has been impacted by what he views as an increasingly hostile climate. Title A name given to the resource Oral History with David Lett Description An account of the resource David Lett is a priest with the North American Old Catholic Church and still performs as the drag queen Lena Lett. David recounts his childhood in Washington D.C., and how he entered the gay community in the 1980s. He then talks about the series of events that led him to pursue a career in the Catholic Church and then his decision to walk away. He then discusses the changing DC gay scene in the 1990s, how he became a business owner and eventually the drag queen Lena Lett. Abstract A summary of the resource. Rev. David Lett was born and raised in DC by a mother and a stepfather that were both police officers. David’s mother would take him to his first Pride parades when she worked them and this was his first introduction to the community. Later on, whilst attending Tracks, a nightclub in South East DC, David would encounter his mother on the dance floor where she came out to him as a lesbian. She admitted that she had remained with his stepfather to help her career, which is why she didn’t end the marriage when it emerged he had sexually assaulted David. David would be counseled through this by a Catholic Priest and this would inspire him to pursue a career as a priest. He studied philosophy and theology and did post-graduate work in Italy — the only one from his Scranton, Pa., class to be chosen to study in Rome, where he was for about three years. But shortly before taking vows David questioned the message of the Catholic Church and decide to step away. Upon leaving seminary David remained with the Catholic Church and became an Assistant Director of Development in DC. However after experiencing burnout he decided to make his part time job as Washington Video his full time job. Eventually David would go on to open a second location on 13th and P, something considered risky at the time due to the lack of gay businesses in the area during the 1990s. The location would later become Halo before eventually becoming Number 9. During the time David decided to start experimenting with drag in the late 1990s, going on to win amateur nights at Chaos and Ziegfields, which would lead to their first booking, performing the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams”. Performing as Lina Lett, Lina became a sort after drag host, culminating in a Pride that had 14 bookings. Lina would eventually become the host at Town Dance Boutique. David would return to the Catholic Church in 2011 when he was ordained as a priest in the North American Old Catholic Church. He fills in at Masses all over the region at Old Catholic parishes that need clergy and has since become Bishop. In 2015 David, suffering from depression would attempt suicide though miraculously survived. After a long recovery process David would continue with his community work, though he doesn’t perform at Lena as much. In these audio clips, John Hannay recounts his journey working in LGBTQ+ spaces in the D.C. metro area. Hailing from Rochester, New York with an educational background in theological studies, Hannay began his career working with the Coalition for the Homeless at the onset of the AIDS epidemic. He then held the first position devoted solely to combatting the AIDS epidemic at the community staple Whitman Walker clinic, where he focused on building relationships between government-based public health structures and non-profit organizations, as well as educating the gay community and public health community about each other. He then worked for SMYAL (Supporting and Mentoring Youth Advocates and Leaders), serving as their first paid professional staff, where he focused on developing a volunteer core to run educational and support groups around health, mental health, and family and relationship issues. He then worked for the Maryland Department of Health’s AIDS program, focusing on developing educational programming to disseminate information about the AIDS virus to affected communities and the broader community. Following his time at the Maryland Department of Health, Hannay helped revive the Gay and Lesbian Community Center in Baltimore. He now works for the United States Department of Health and Human Services, where he continues to work on projects surrounding HIV and AIDS. While recounting his storied career, Hannay touches upon the influence of religion, family, and community in his life as both a professional and a gay man living through the AIDS epidemic. He interjects with anecdotes about other accomplishments in his storied career, always connecting them back to how it fits into the larger picture of the movement he was fighting for and the work he was doing.
