Earl Fowles moved to Washington DC from New York in 1996 for a position in Damien Ministries and at the encouragement of his friends in DC. His friend, Christopher Bates, connected him to several people and organizations that he became involved in, such as the DC Care Coalition where he served as a board member. He succeeded Carlene Cheatam as president of DC Capital Pride in 1997. He remained in that role for three years. He then became president of the National Federation of Black Prides (the predecessor of today’s International Federation of Black Prides). Upon leaving that role, he served as co-chair of the Community Prevention Group, an advisory body for DC’s Agency for HIV/AIDS (AHA). In that role, he advised AHA on how to spend monies provided by the CDC for the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS. Fowlkes preferred “behind the scenes” activism; continuing dialogue and managing follow-up activities long past marches, demonstrations, and events. Key events that he did attend include the AIDS Memorial Quilt display on the National Mall in 1992 and 1996, the latter in which he participated by reading a selection of names of those represented in the quilt. Dr. Richard DiGioia moved to Washington, DC in 1974 during a two-year medical military commitment. DiGioia, who had extensive experience treating sexually transmitted infections from his prior military service in Korea, first heard about the Gay Men’s Venereal Disease Clinic while listening to the Friends radio program in 1975. DiGioia began volunteering at the clinic, and soon became the clinic’s doctor. DiGioia also opened up his own internal practice in 1977, and advertised his services in the Washington Blade–becoming one of the first openly gay physicians in DC. By the early 1980s, DiGioia began seeing some of DC’s first cases of HIV/AIDS. DiGioia was heavily involved in treating, studying, and spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS in both the gay community and medical community in Washington. For example, DiGioia wrote a regular medical column in the Blade sharing updated information about the disease; served as chairman of the District’s AIDS Advisory Committee; gave regular talks to federal and medical groups about HIV/AIDS; was on the panel of DC’s first HIV/AIDS public forum at Lisner Auditorium in 1983 (both John Willig and Ray Engebretsen being his patients); and even took Mother Teresa on a tour around GWU Hospital to visit AIDS patients. DiGioia shares how being a gay doctor during the AIDS epidemic made him a better doctor in general, for he learned how to truly empathize with his patients, and offer them more holistic care. Towards the end of the interview, DiGioia raises concerns regarding the current situation of HIV/AIDS healthcare in 2007. He highlights the need for improved community education and empowerment in the gay community, as well as a major overhaul of the increasingly bureaucratized, unaffordable, and impersonal United States healthcare system making HIV/AIDS treatment inaccessible for so many Americans. This is a conversation between Dr. Richard DiGioia and an interviewer, discussing Dr. DiGioia's involvement in the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Washington DC. Dr. DiGioia shares his experiences as a doctor at the Gay Men's VD clinic and later as a primary care physician treating HIV patients. Native Washingtonian Kwabena Rainey Cheeks, active in his community since childhood, tells the story of his life in activism, from helping those in his neighborhood as a child, to becoming a Minister and giving back well into adulthood. Cheeks grew up in martial arts, growing to be ranked top ten nationally. As one of the original founders of the Clubhouse, one of Washington’s most prominent Gay dance clubs in the 80’s, Cheeks interacted with many members of the community from famous ballet dancer Rudolf Nurevev to singer Patti LaBelle. Cheeks founded Us Helping Us, a nonprofit organization focused on helping those in the community affected with AIDS. Later in life he became a minister and founded the church Inner Light Unity Fellowship Church, which works to be an accepting community organization. Through the Church, Cheeks still to this day leads his community through mentorship, retreats, and activism, while continuing to create what he describes as heaven on Earth in the form of enjoying life. Donald Burch III is an African American from Detroit. Donald tested positive for HIV in 1985. His disease seems to have very little to no effect on the influentiality he wishes his life to have, as he continues to strive for prosperous opportunities beyond his home in Detroit. Upon his relief of his military duties due to the awareness of his disease, he unsurprisingly makes way to Washington DC. Faith Temple becomes a common place of reference for Donald, for it had been the place he claims to be his place of worship and shelter when he was most unfortunate. Donald also discusses things such as where he went for fun, how he made friends and the places they went, his love life, and what he did to give back to the community.
