Keith Clark provides us with a bit of narration of his early life in the DMV area, first arriving in Baltimore back in 83’ for an internship, and then shortly making way to DuPont Circle just two years later. The DC area is where Keith makes his permanent move as he expresses that the quality of people allowed for a most comfortable stay. When not working at the architecture firm, he spent a good deal of time making friends at the gym where the population of other gay men had been plentiful. Keith also expresses that DC had a way of making politics more interesting and enjoyable for him. Around this time is when the aid crisis began to take flame as well. Keith had lost many friends to such, and later would find that he had become infected himself. Depression has struck Keith many times. He feared his inevitable death, as well as the death of his friends/acquaintances. Nonetheless, Keith continued to volunteer, first with HRC, then participating in the aid walk, and many more events thereafter. Eventually there was a time when Keith started his own volunteer opportunities, and then he felt that he must consider things for himself. Kieth started “One in 10” and began to sell high-end clothing so that he could begin saving up enough to prepare for a time when working may not be much of a choice anymore due to his illness. Partners Jim Bogden and Charles Taylor discuss their paths to finding each other and their communities in Washington D.C. while addressing the struggles of being a part of the LGBTQ community. Taylor addresses struggles of coming from a rural/suburban community, and his experience finding a community and dealing with the city. Bogden, coming from another urban environment, discusses less of a struggle dealing with D.C., but focuses more on interactions with his late partner George, and his introductions into the community. The home that Bogden and Taylor share today was a significant factor in their discussion. Just north of Lincoln Park, their neighborhood was once a center for gay and lesbian homeownership, people who have now slowly been pushed out. Additonally, the struggle for the ability to co-own the home is apparent in their lives, as the two face the tax struggles of being in a non-heteronormative relationship. She also discusses coming out to her family, moving to DC, her involvement in the DC LGBTQ+ community, how being a lesbian has impacted her professional career, and her past and current relationships. Abstract A summary of the resource. Esther Katzman moved to Washington, DC in 1979 with her girlfriend at the time, whom she met in college. In DC, Katzman became involved in her synagogue and Gay Women’s Alternative, which was an educational and social women’s organization. It was the first organization of its kind in DC. Katzman also discusses other clubs, especially gay clubs, that she went to in DC. She also shares some thoughts about presenting as a more ‘feminine’ lesbian and lessons she learned while in an interracial relationship. Katzman discusses her experience as a lesbian throughout her professional career in psychotherapy, sharing that she was out at most jobs but purposefully did not come out at several for a number of reasons. Katzman founded Senior Health Resources, an organization for aging LGBTQ+ people and their family and friends. She discusses the motivations behind starting the organization – namely that she was appalled by the lack of care for older people in the healthcare system – and the processes of starting it. She also shares about her partner at the time and the new lessons and boundaries she implemented in that relationship after coming out of a 10-year relationship. Katzman discusses coming from a family in which several of her sisters are also lesbian and her coming out process. While her mother initially took her coming out poorly, she has since become accepting. Katzman learned through that experience that just as it takes time for LGBTQ+ people to come to terms with their own identities, it sometimes takes family/friends time to process when a loved one comes out. Finally, Katzman discusses how Pride has changed over the years, sharing that she preferred the Pride events that were not as commercialized.
