Lampos grew up in Northern Virginia and went to college at the University of Virginia before moving to the district. He talked about how, when he was in college, gay groups had started popping up and he joined the one at UVA. They had regular meetings and scheduled big dances to create and celebrate community, even though many of these people were not out to family or even friends at the time. After moving to DC, Lee looked for ways to get connected with and involved in the gay community and found out about the gay and lesbian switchboard, a phone hotline staffed by volunteers to share information about gay-friendly places, activities, businesses, and services. The switchboard was founded in the 7ps but Lampos joined in the late 80s when a lot of people were getting involved. Both men and women worked at the switchboard, with volunteer numbers getting up to 40+ at the peak of operations in the mid 1980s. Lee listed a few of the locations the switchboard worked out of before shutting down in the late 90s. These included a community center at 17th & R streets, another community center int eh early 90s at Massachusetts and N street, they also had trainings at the director’s house on Logan Circle and Rhode Island Avenue and moved to yet another community center on M & 18th street before getting their own office in an old high rise building at 16th and P streets. Lampos discussed how the switchboard became a conduit for all kinds of resources and information about and for the gay and lesbian community in DC and shared a list of restaurants, bars, and businesses that were gay friendly from the 80s to the early 2000s. These included Lambda Rising, Freddy’s, The Eagle, The Green Lantern, Rummington’s, The Phase, Llamas Bookstore, and Banana Cafe. Volunteers utilized publications like The Blade and the gay yellow pages, as well as tips from community members to put together their notebook of resources. They also created an official guidebook for the community as well, and attended conferences with other gay and lesbian hotline workers in New York City. Not only did the switchboard provide information and point people in the direction of the resources they needed, the volunteers were also available to talk people through other general problems of being a gay person at the time - coming out, relationship problems, talking with community members, dealing with AIDS in the community, and much more. When asked why a lot of the gay bars, restaurants, and other businesses have since closed, Lee talk through how the community has come a long way and we no longer need as many specific places that are gay-friendly, because most places are gay-friendly. Although he lamented the loss of these secret, under-the-radar type spaces, Lee talked about how just in his lifetime he went from being nervous when seeing two men holding hands in public to that being accepted and normal in most of our everyday lives. Kolb, a businessman now living in Florida, recounts his life in DC, his volunteer work with the Gay Hotline, and his work with the Potomac Executive Network, later to become the Capital Area Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Joe Kolb was born and raised in Washington, DC. After college, he worked for design firms, while helping start in 1976 the Gay Hotline, a telephone support network linking area gay men to social, health, and community resources. Daniel Hays, longtime board member of the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance (AGLA), talks about his upbringing and experience living in Missouri and how he transitioned to life in Washington, D.C. He discusses how he got involved with AGLA and the types of outreach and work he has engaged in as part of the team, as well as his experience as a drag queen. Daniel Hays was born in Central Missouri, working in politics there before moving to D.C. 15 years ago. Upon arrival in D.C., Daniel was soon connected with the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance (AGLA) where he became the Vice President, and has been on the board ever since. Growing up in Missouri in a very religious, conservative, small town region was an influence on his drag persona, Muffy - this persona was in some ways a therapeutic version of everything he disliked about Christianity. While Daniel still considers himself a Christian, his experience coming out as gay after college and becoming deeply involved in the queer community as a member of AGLA and as a drag queen has led him to identify with a very different version of Christianity than was pushed on him as a child. Prior to AGLA, Daniel had a multitude of political experience - including being a Chief of Staff at the Missouri House of Representatives, and working for the Missouri Department of Labor. This political background, he believes, prepared him for his leading role at AGLA. Within AGLA, Daniel quickly advanced from Vice President to President, which he has served 4 terms as. Moving from involvement in LGBTQ+ organizations in Missouri to D.C. showed Daniel that the prevalence and amount of LGBTQ+ organizations in D.C. leads to a struggle to have volunteers and members be actively involved in. He notes that especially in Arlington, which is a very progressive and LGBTQ+ area, some people in the community take for granted the rights that they enjoy and therefore tend to be less activist. As President of AGLA, this is something Daniel had to contend with. Now, many of the LGBTQ+ organizations that were around when Daniel joined AGLA no longer exist - this led AGLA to unofficially expand their coverage area to confront the changing landscape of activist organizations. Daniel then goes on to talk about his experience as a drag queen, considering himself “old school drag”. He has done drag fundraisers for various causes and has found that people turn out for those. He helped to create the Miss Arlington Pageant for drag queens as part of AGLA, which has now been going on for 10 years. In his own personal life, Daniel spoke about how influential his drag family was as mentors, and how he had quit drag before moving to Arlington but got back into it in 2008. Daniel is big on using drag as a positive outreach tool, and hopes to increase AGLA’s activism in other LGBTQ+ spaces: particularly the fetish community and trans community. He speaks about how the LGBTQ+ community can often be divisive among itself, and how he thinks it is important for AGLA and other organizations to bring people together from different communities. Through AGLA, Daniel has been able to engage in community activism working with other organizations, such as Equality Virginia and Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). He also spoke about AGLA’s scholarship program, which provides a scholarship yearly to a high school senior, as well as some of AGLA’s keystone events including the pageant and the Equality Awards. Abstract A summary of the resource. Gregory Ford has been an active member of DC's theater and performance community since he came here to study theater in 1972. Originally from California, Mr. Ford went to college in Santa Fe, New Mexico before coming to DC to study theater at Catholic University. Though he did not finish the program at Catholic University, he stayed active as a performance poet and was a founding member of the Station to Station group of gay African-American poets which included Essex Hemphill. Mr. Ford was also in a romantic relationship with the poet Chasen Gaver. More recently, Mr. Ford has taken up playback theater, and has sometimes lead a group of HIV+ African-American playback performers.
