Talking Black Gay History: Ric Irick, publisher of "Malebox!"

In celebration of Black History Month, Rainbow History Project dug into its archives of Black gay and lesbian publications to interview Ric Irick, the creator and publisher of the magazine "Malebox!: DC’s Largest Publication for Black Gay Men."
Between 1993 and 1999, Irick published Malebox!, a monthly newsletter and magazine subtitled “the intimate opinions, experiences & emotions of Black Gay Men.” By its end, Malebox! reached more than 2,000 subscribers in the Black gay community of Washington, D.C., and nationwide. The magazine covered cultural happenings, news, political organizing, and HIV/AIDS organizing and also carried personal ads.
Vincent Slatt, RHP’s director of archiving, interviewed Irick about the origins and impact of Malebox!, what came next and the relevance of Malebox! 25 years later.
The discussion touched on twelve other collections of Black gay and lesbian magazines in the Rainbow History archives and included questions from the audience: Dr. Keith Crawford; Chuck Hicks; Dr. Paul M. Smith; Isaiah Poole; Donald Burch, Courtney Williams, and others.
